Our group is working on the subject of the quality of TV, especially regarding the issues of transparency and traceability of TV content. Regarding these two issues in the sense of TV content, news content are more closely related and discussed.
We start with introducing the concept and definition about transparency and traceability from a general aspect as well as going further with the example of TV. It is then followed by our observations on how these two aspects are achieved and to what extent they are implemented and achieved both nationally and internationally in the reality.
Secondly, based on what've observed and investigated, there are definitely two different and sometimes conflicted ways and attitudes of dealing with the transparency and traceability of TV content in terms of national and international TV organizations. Therefore, we raise two hypotheses about what might be the problems and why these problems exist.
Thirdly, in order to justify our hypotheses, we adopt two measurements. For one, we conduct surveys to the general public, who are segmented by their ages. On the other hand, we make interviews with the professionals in the media industry. Our main task here is to collect data from both the general public and the industry insiders. Fourthly, we check the data we have collected and then analyze them. We are trying to find out what are the real core problems there and why they are happening.
Finally, we will propose a practical and effective solution for solving the imbalance between the international and national ways of handling TV content regarding the transparency and traceability.
Based on a thought provoking survey of to what extent students trust television news, this presentation proposes an interesting combination of semantic web technologies and community TV for enhancing the traceability and transparency of future television news content. The presentation poses challenging questions about how communities can mobilise their members to take part in critique through metadata tagging and how the private sphere of the individual can be guarded, or not.
